We analyzed countertop materials in 616,600 kitchen designs and the statistics are staggering with how popular granite is.
Here are the top 5 kitchen countertop materials:
- Granite: 42.59% of kitchen countertops are granite.
- Engineered quartz: 20.93% are engineered quartz.
- Marble: 9.94% are marble.
- Quartzite: 8.68% are quartzite.
- Solid surface: 5.47% are solid surface.
Nearly half of kitchens have granite countertops.
My preferred countertop is engineered quartz. It's just as functional as granite, but I think looks better; more subtle.
While our data stretches back to 2009, so it's fairly recent, I wouldn't be surprised if in recent years, engineered quartz is making up a higher percentage. I say this based on anecdotal evidence only looking at the hundreds of kitchen designs we see weekly as well as what top interior designers are using in new kitchens.
For now, I'd have to say granite is not outdated, but if it's a concern or you're just not as wild about it as other people are, go with engineered quartz.
